Research Focus
A major focus of my research is the role of infectious agents in the development and progression of cancer. Our research team has conducted extensive investigations of the molecular epidemiology and natural history of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the pathogenesis of anogenital and head & neck cancers, including collaborative studies in the U.S., Asia, Pacific, and Africa. We have investigated the role of the oral bacterial microbiome and bacterial metabolites in hepatocellular carcinoma and other cancers. My research also focuses on understanding racial/ethnic disparities in cancer development and outcomes with a focus on molecular biomarkers of risk and progression.
